Music culture today, i would say, has a large percentage of it revolving around sex. As time has passed music has become more and more "provocative" and i think that music has had a large influence on todays culture. Because younger people are so quick to idolize popular music artists, they begin to look to them as role models. This, in turn i believe is the cause of the more provocative nature of today's culture. In the "My Music" readings, I agreed with what chad was saying about music revovling around the ideas and demands of young people. Younger people are probably the largest market for selling music. Although newer more popular groups usually attract younger crowds, there are also those few select bands that manage to remain popular throughout generations like: the beatles, the beach boys, prince and even michael jackson. Although these bands are no longer the hip new artists, they seem to attract all people of all ages.
My love of music did not really develope until i was about 12 years old. I started off listening to my dad's older music like eddie money, the eagles, and guns n' roses. This probably happened because it was the only music i ever listened to, and it was while he drove me to school every morning. To this day, i still enjoy listening to his old music and its something that we can share. Since then i have aquired a taste for all different kinds of music. Now my dad also listens to alot of my music. Like we discussed in class, he will find that some of the music i listen to is doing a cover of one of his older songs. If we didn't share music we would never make these connections and i would never have understood the reference. It's cool to see how music has evolved through generations and cultures.

I agree about a lot of today's music being sex-related and about how many young people idolize the popular artists. I think that many of these artists also have a huge say in the styles and trends of fashion. They probably have a lot to do with self-esteem issues especially in younger girls who feel that they cannot live up to the way they are supposed to look and act.
ReplyDeleteI too agree with the sex-driven music. Especially with the Pop artists, and visual media like music videos and live concerts. It seems like with the pop artists whom the children of today idolize, sex, drugs, partying, and whatnot are a large influence in their songs. Even if they aren't in the lyrics, the dances and such that go along with them make up for them. Even the outfits that are worn, more so the female artists, are getting more and more scandalous.
ReplyDeleteThe sexual nature of today's music is just one example of the problems with all forms of media today. Our culture is obsessed with sex and violence. People still listen to timeless music like the Beatles because it's some of the only music they can listen to that isn't sex related or provocative in any way.
